When Growth Outpaces Structure

Over the years, I have worked with many companies experiencing growing pains. Here is one example of a B2B services company: what started as a single, profitable business quickly expanded into multiple separate segments—each serving adjacent or complementary needs in the market.

The growth was exciting. Revenue climbed, service lines diversified, and the market responded well. But behind the scenes, complexity began to take hold.

Despite healthy top-line numbers, the structure hadn’t kept up with the scale.

Financial processes were siloed or nonexistent. Tax obligations weren’t being optimized. Critical knowledge was scattered across teams. And while each segment operated independently, leadership was often asking the same questions:

“Are we truly profitable—or just busy?”

“Which business line is driving returns?”
